Bruno III from Mansfeld
Count Bruno III. von Mansfeld-Bornstedt (born September 13, 1576 ; † September 6, 1644 in Vienna ) was a Knight of Malta , soldier and chief hunter in the Habsburg service.
Life
Count Bruno III. was the fourth son of Brunos II and Countess Christine von Barby. His brothers were Wolfgang and Philipp von Mansfeld . His grandfather was Philipp II von Mansfeld , who founded the Bornstedter sideline of the originally Thuringian house of Mansfeld and transplanted it into the Habsburg lands as Chamberlain of Emperor Charles V.
Bruno converted to Catholicism around 1600 , became a Knight of Malta and carried out the “caravan” incumbent on him (pirate trips against the Ottoman sea trade). Then he joined the army fighting against the Turks in Hungary and distinguished himself - especially during the conquest of Hatván in November 1603 - that he was appointed a council of war. In May 1607 he appears as a chamberlain in the vicinity of Archduke Matthias . In order to justify his elevation against Emperor Rudolf before the ecclesiastical Elector and Archduke Albrecht , he was seconded in 1608, but arrested in Regensburg on imperial orders and taken to Prague. Quickly released, he returned to Matthias' court, from whom he was subsequently used several times in political business.
In 1615 he was appointed satellite captain, colonel stable master and chief hunter master. He kept the last two offices under Ferdinand II "and brought hunting to such perfection that one has never had the like of it, nor will it be found in other places." The Oberstjägermeisteramt therefore remained under Ferdinand III. Emperor Matthias retained his special favor until his death and Ferdinand II, who was eager to hunt and who died in his arms, was no less friendly.
