Bruno Vailati

Bruno Vailati (born September 2, 1919 in Alexandria , Egypt , † February 26, 1990 in Rome , Italy ) was an Italian director, screenwriter, producer and documentary filmmaker.

Life

After graduating in law and social sciences in Rome, he joined the resistance in September 1943 and distributed weapons among the population.

After the war, Bruno Vailati became a filmmaker. In 1954 he wrote the screenplay for the documentary The Sixth Continent about a diving expedition to the Red Sea . In 1958 he was the producer of the adventure film Hercules and the Queen of the Amazons with Steve Reeves . In 1959 he produced the adventure film Battle of Marathon by Jacques Tourneur , in 1960 he wrote the screenplay for Arthur Lubin's film The Crooks of Baghdad with Edy Vessel and again Reeves. In 1963, together with Charles Frend, he made the war film Treffpunkt Tanger with James Mason , Lilli Palmer and Alberto Lupo . In 1966, ZDF broadcast its thirteen-part documentary series Die Eroberung des Meeres . In 1975, ZDF broadcast its five-part television series The Discovery of the Sea . In 1976 his documentary Menschen und Haie was released in cinemas. In the same year he shot the miniseries The Men of the Naumachos (a co-production between the GDR and Italy) with Mario Adorf , which was first broadcast on GDR television in 1986 .

In the 1980s, Vailati was an active environmentalist who campaigned for nature conservation initiatives in the mountainous regions of the Monti Simbruini . In his honor the municipality of Campaegli named a nature trail.

Bruno Vailati died on February 26, 1990 to cancer .

Awards

In 1970 Vailati received the special price at the David di Donatello Awards for his documentary Andrea Doria '74 , which is about an American / Italian diving expedition to the wreck of the passenger ship Andrea Doria in 1968.
