Bryconaethiops (= "African Brycon "), German Fadensalmler , is a genus of fish from the family of the African tetras (Alestidae). The five species in the family live in the fresh waters of central, tropical Africa .

features

Bryconaethiops species have an elongated, laterally flattened, silvery body and are 7.2 to 25 cm long. Diagnostic features of the genus are three rows of teeth on the premaxillary , a feature that is not found in any other genus of Alestidae. The inner premaxillary teeth are more or less molar-like. The fish's eye is protected by a well-developed fatty eyelid . The dorsal fin attachment is always clearly in front of that of the anal fin. In all species there is a clear sexual dimorphism in the form of a differently pronounced anal fin. In the males, the first dorsal fin rays can also be elongated like a filament, which is why they are also known in German as "Fadensalmler".

Habitat and way of life

Bryconaethiops species live as schooling fish in lakes and rivers of central Africa from the Niger Delta to Lower Guinea and the Congo Basin to Tanzania .

species

A total of five species belong to the genus Bryconaethiops .
