The Krabben book printing company in Koblenz on the Middle Rhine was both a bookstore and a newspaper publisher . It was created at the beginning of the 18th century from the former Ehrenbreitsteiner Hofbuchdruckerei Theodor Burggraf and existed until 1944.

In the middle of the 18th century the widow Christina Krabben ran the company.

Christina crabs

About 250 years ago Christina Krabben was such an extraordinary woman - and thus also for the entire Krabben dynasty - that several authors have already dealt with her life and professional activities. Nevertheless, it has apparently not yet been possible to determine their birth and death dates. The marriage of a Christina Krabben (née Frett) to Peter Krabben on February 7th, 1736 has been properly documented only thanks to the church records of the Liebfrauen old town parish in Koblenz . According to this, she had married into a dynasty of book printers and publishers in Koblenz that had been documented since 1704.

history

Joannes Franciscus Krabben, descendant of one of the reign of King Charles IX for reasons of faith . (1604–1611) family, who had fled Sweden and settled in the Cologne area, came to Ehrenbreitstein near Koblenz at the end of the 17th century. There he married the daughter Maria Catherina of the owner of the Ehrenbreitsteiner Hofbuchdruckerei Theodor Burggraf on February 22, 1705. Coming from the Eifel , he had only been a citizen of the city of Koblenz since 1669 and has also been a bookseller since 1700 . Texts, newsletters and official documents for the electoral residence in the Ehrenbreitsteiner Philippsburg were printed and traded in house No. 226 on the Ehrenbreitsteiner Markt . Religious writings also appeared.

After the death of his father-in-law Theodor Burggraf, Joannes (Johannes) Franciscus (Franz) Krabben not only took over the printing works in Ehrenbreitstein on the right bank of the Rhine, but also the company's headquarters, which is now on the other side of the Rhine in the city of Koblenz am Plan (near the municipal guard). In 1716, the new owner Johannes (Johann) Franz Krabben was even appointed Typographus Serenissimi Electoris Trevirensis . In 1730 he became the elector's printer to the court, but died that same year on November 2nd.

After 1730

His successor was the 32-year-old son Peter Krabben, who was married to the aforementioned Christina Krabben (née Frett). The couple's children were Catharina Walburga (married Laymann; their siblings remained unmarried), Gertrude Margarethe, Anna Christina, Johann Peter and Johann Balthasar. Three years after the early death of her husband Peter in 1754, the widow Christina received Krabben on September 20, 1757 - completely unusual for a woman of the time! - the printing monopoly for the greater Koblenz area (Untererzstift). The award document came from the Elector and Archbishop Johann Philipp von Waldersdorff (1701–1768). From then on, the widow Krabben ran the company independently with around 20 to 30 employees. It was even confirmed again as a court book printer with a document dated August 10, 1771. In the same year the children, Johann Balthasar and Catharina Walburga Krabben, who had already trained as printers , took over the business. Books, court calendars, official ordinance gazettes, magazines and newspapers continued to be printed and distributed. In 1779 the printing and publishing house was relocated from the previous Am Plan building (near Hauptwache) to the newly built Maas'sche Haus on Plan No. 13 opposite .

Further development

In 1787 the company passed to Johann Balthasar Krabben (younger brother of the late Peter). In 1794 the Rhineland was occupied by French troops, with serious effects on all areas of life: the new freedom of trade also meant that the Krabben family's monopoly on printing was lost. Even so, the printing company stayed in the family.

In 1811, Gertrude Margarethe Krabben received a Brevet de tolerance au nom de l'empereur from the French general director for printing and libraries in Paris . The Krabben family, for example the siblings Gertrude Margarethe and Anna Christina Krabben, ran the publishing house until the first half of the 19th century. The Krabben company had thus remained successfully family-owned for more than 130 years. On July 3, 1829, a grandson of Catharina Walburga Krabben (married to the electoral court treasurer Otto Laymann from Koblenz), Caspar Doetsch (1805–1880), became editor-in-chief and managing director: His mother Catharina Laymann had the Kärlicher Burghofmann and mayor Johann Heinrich in 1807 Doetsch (1777-1854) married.

Company takeover

A year later, Caspar Doetsch took over the entire Krabben company. After Caspar Doetsch's death in 1880, his son Hermann (1847–1912) continued the business. In 1888 Doetsch, who was also the publisher of the traditional national liberal Coblenzer Zeitung , bought an advertising paper from the Müller & Co. publishing house and developed the successful and high-circulation Coblenzer General-Anzeiger from it . This newspaper was the official advertising paper for the Koblenz district and, in addition to regional reporting, also offered information from all over the world. The paper pursued the concept of an impartial newspaper. On May 31, 1912, the printing works went to the two children Kaspar Doetsch and Louisa Aderholdt, b. Doetsch, about. They founded the company Krabbensche Buchdruckerei, Geschwister Doetsch GmbH Coblenz . With the acquisition of two more newspapers, the printing company became the market leader in the Koblenz area and survived both the First World War and the inflationary period unscathed.

It was not until 1923, under the French occupation and the separatist government, that publishing work was severely restricted. On February 1, 1923, the occupying power issued a three-day ban on printing the General-Anzeiger because the editorial staff had refused to publish notices from the authority. On March 23, the French confiscated the print shop and used it as a replacement printing site for the Gutenberg print shop, which was partially destroyed by students. Now the notices of the occupation authorities and the separatist newspapers were printed here. Even before the proclamation of the independent Rhenish Republic on October 26, 1923, the owners and employees managed to drive the separatists out of the print shop and to reissue the General-Anzeiger. However, the newspaper continued to suffer from reprisals from the occupation authorities. After the occupation troops withdrew on November 30, 1929, when the National Socialists came to power, new difficulties began due to their policy of harmonization . In 1944 the General-Anzeiger was incorporated into the National Gazette . The company recently changed its name to the mid 20th century under pressure and publisher of the crab's book Druckerei GmbH in Coblenz / Koblenz until then in the Second World War 17 was completely and finally destroyed by bombing in 1944 with his last headquarters in Koblenz Rhein street.

Overall, the company (with printing and publishing) kept the name "Krabben" for over 250 years and is one of the major printers, booksellers and publishers in the city of Koblenz.
