Buia ( Roman . Also: Bulia , German: Bell , Boll , Boel , ung .: Bólya , Alsóbólya , Felsőbólya , Nagybólya , Saxon: Bäll , Bell ) is a village in the Sibiu district in Transylvania , Romania . It is located in the Kaltbachtal (rum .: Calva ), about 54 km north-northeast of Sibiu , 30 km southwest of Mediasch and belongs to the municipality of Șeica Mare ( Marktschelken ).

The headquarters of the Bolyai family (German: Bell ), an important Hungarian noble family of German origin with the Kerpen an der Erft headquarters, is located in Buia . However, the former castle is now in ruins.

population

  • In 1850 the village had 1,112 inhabitants, of which 613 were Romanians, 210 Germans, 169 Hungarians, 74 Roma and 35 Jews. 687 people confessed to the Greek Catholic Church , 209 belonged to the Saxon Evangelical Church , 147 to the Hungarian Reformed Church , 35 were of the Jewish faith and 34 were Roman Catholic .
  • In 1900 the village had 1,167 inhabitants, of which 736 Romanians, 241 Hungarians and 204 Germans. 735 were Greek Catholic, 191 Protestant, 159 Catholic, 51 Reformed and 24 Jewish. 27 percent could read and write; only six percent said they could not speak Hungarian.
  • In 2002 the village had only 634 inhabitants. Of these, 516 declared themselves Romanians, 104 Hungarians and 11 Germans. 514 of them were Romanian Orthodox and 109 Roman Catholic.
