The Social Democratic Party of Germany held the Federal Party Congress of the SPD in 1973 from April 10-14, 1973 in Hanover . It was the 15th regular party congress of the SPD in the Federal Republic of Germany. The venue was the city hall (today: Hannover Congress Centrum ).
In terms of content, the line of the federal government was supported, the elections to the party executive led to a massive shift to the left.
decisions
The party congress opened with a speech by Helmut Schmidt . The main speaker on April 11 was Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt . Both emphasized the similarities in the existing social-liberal coalition . Brandt in particular tried to give a speech that would include everyone and create a broad basis and, in the opinion of Arnulf Baring , thus hit the mood of the party congress:
"Instead of dividing the clouds with lightning and thunder, instead of separating the good from the bad with fire and sword, Brandt offered friendly, sunny fog"
The 435 delegates had to resolve over 977 motions. The party congress resolutions were decidedly state-supporting. In foreign policy one followed exactly the line of the party leadership. Motions suggesting anti-Americanism and neutralism were voted down. In domestic politics, the party congress (against internal party resistance) committed itself to the radical decree and only demanded a "clarification" of the extremist resolution.
The long-term program was not decided, but referred back to the long-term commission. In this paper of the long-term commission, representatives of the New Left had called for nationalization and economic control .
Personnel
Even if pragmatic positions had prevailed in terms of content, the board elections showed a massive shift to the left. The previous party executive consisted of 18 members of the right wing, 10 members of the center and 6 members of the left wing. 9 representatives from the right wing, 8 from the middle and 18 from the left wing were newly elected. Hans Ulrich Kempski wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, which is close to the SPD, of a "basic left wing" at the party congress.
On the right wing and in the middle, the head of the sewer workers , Egon Franke, as well as Carlo Schmid , Annemarie Renger , Jockel Fuchs , Marie Schlei , Günter Schwarz and Käte Strobel were not re-elected. Others, such as Alex Möller , Karl Schiller or Karl Wienand , no longer competed.
On the left side, however, Rudi Arndt , Peter von Oertzen and the Juso chairman Wolfgang Roth were elected.
