The Christian Democratic Union of Germany held the (early) federal party conference of the CDU in June 1973 on June 12, 1973 in Bonn . It was the 21st ordinary federal party conference of the CDU in the Federal Republic of Germany. The venue was the Beethovenhalle . The early party congress had become necessary due to the resignation of Rainer Barzel . The federal party conference planned for 1973 was then held from November 18-20, 1973 in Hamburg . At the party congress, Helmut Kohl replaced Rainer Barzel as chairman.

Personnel

The question of the chairman was at the center of the public discussions in the run-up to the party congress. In the early federal election of November 1972 , Barzel was candidate for chancellor of the Union parties, but was defeated by the incumbent and popular Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt . Barzel resigned on May 9, 1973 from the office of CDU federal chairman. As a result, the party congress originally planned for autumn 1973 was brought forward.

After Barzel's resignation, Kohl was the only candidate. In the election for chairman he received 520 votes, 51 against and 29 abstentions. In the press, this high approval was commented on as a high political achievement and as a preliminary decision on the top candidacy in the 1976 federal election .

Kurt Biedenkopf was elected Secretary General with 529 of 601 valid votes. Walther Leisler Kiep received 401 of 517 votes when he was re-elected as Federal Treasurer.

All five proposed candidates were elected as deputy chairpersons:
