The Federal Government of Brazil ( Portuguese Governo Federal do Brasil ), legally and União is known, the central national government of the Federative Republic of Brazil , recently established by the Federal Constitution of 1988 ( Constituição da República Federativa do Brasil ), the sovereignty over the territory with the other state units, the states , the federal district and the municípios . The seat of the federal government is in Brasília with the presidential seat Palácio do Planalto , metonym for the executive branch Planalto for short .

Brazil is a federal , presidential and constitutional republic based on representative democracy . The federal government has three independent branches: executive , legislative and judicial .

The federal constitution is the supreme law of Brazil. It is the basis and source of the legal form that underlies the existence of Brazil and the federal government. It forms the framework for the organization of the Brazilian government and its relationship to the individual states, as well as to the citizens and all other people who live in Brazil.

The executive branch is the President exercised advised by the Cabinet of Ministers . The president is both head of state and head of government simultaneously. The legislative power is applied to the National Congress transmitted, a two-chamber system consisting of the Federal Senate and House of Representatives consists. The judicial power is represented by the Justice completed, consisting of the Supreme Court , the Supreme Court , other federal courts and the National Judicial Council and the regional federal courts.
