The Annecy Castle ( French Château d'Annecy ) is the old residence of the counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Nemours . It is located in the center of the city of the same name , the center of the Haute-Savoie department , which belongs to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France . The castle was acquired by the city of Annecy in 1953 from the property of the Ministry of the Army, then restored and converted into a museum. Today it houses the Musée-Château . The castle stands since October 12 1959 as a monument historique under monument protection .
location
The spur castle is located at 470 m on a rock ledge, a last foothill of the Semnoz mountain near the river Thiou on the western bank of the Lac d'Annecy (German lake of Annecy ), the second largest inland lake in France. It lies above the road from Geneva to Italy.
history
The castle was built between the 12th century and the 16th century. At that time it was the seat of the Counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Nemours. The castle was damaged several times by fire, partially or severely. After the conflagration of 1320, Annecy Castle was abandoned as a residence for two years and during that time it was under the reign of Amadeus III. rebuilt by Geneva. From the 17th century until 1947 it was used as a barracks.
