Kuehnring Castle

The former Kühnring Castle in the market town of Burgschleinitz-Kühnring was the ancestral castle of the Kuenringers .

history

At the point where now the parish church of Kühnring , built stands Hadmar I the ancestral castle of the first half of the 12th century Kuenringer after at the end of the 11th century his grandfather Azzo of Gobatsburg here a chapel was built, which Bishop Altmann von Passau was consecrated and later served as a castle chapel . After the castle was destroyed, it was rededicated as a parish church and, in some cases, rebuilt several times. When it was rebuilt in 1660, it finally got its present appearance.

Destruction of the castle

In the 13th century, the castle was officially owned by Eufemia von Kuenring-Pottendorf. Georg von Kuenring was Land Marshal around 1460 and had to fight against the troops of Gamareth Fronauer , who was settled in Orth on the Danube and who waged war against Kaiser Friedrich . One of the wildest partisans of Gamareth Fronauer, Johann Götzesdorfer, settled in Kühnring Castle, which had been neglected for many years, wintered there and from there plundered the area with around a thousand former mercenaries. Eggenburg's keeper, Wolfgang Kadawer, drove the Götzesdorfer out and destroyed Kühnring Castle. In 1463 the emperor allowed him to own and use the village of Kühnring. That is a sign that the castle was destroyed and desolate.

How the castle was destroyed in such a way that parts of the wall several meters thick were thrown away and turned by 90 degrees, while the former castle chapel and today's church next to it remained intact, is still a mystery today. It is believed that the walls were drilled and wooden beams were driven into the holes that were created, which were then flooded and the walls were blown up. Only a few large parts of the wall and part of the moat still bear witness to the former castle complex.
