Rastenberg Castle

The Burg Rastenberg is a Roman hilltop castle in the town of Rastenfeld in the district of Krems-Land in Lower Austria . It is a listed building .

history

The date of construction of the castle can be narrowed down to the period between 1193 and 1205 by means of a dendrochronological examination. It was part of a defense system along the Kamp and was in visual contact with the neighboring castles of Ottenstein and Lichtenfels .

The Rastenbergers come from the Rauheneck family, whose ancestral castle Rauheneck is west of Baden near Vienna . The last detectable Rastenberger, an Otto, died in 1292/93.

In 1363 the rule was handed over to Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg and subsequently administered by carers or given as pledges.

In the 15th century the complex was badly damaged by the Hussites . From 1432 the castle was in the feudal possession of the Neidegger, the lords of the castle Oberranna had Rastenberg castle fortified. After the Neidegger died out, the Protestant-minded Michael Zeller was given the lordship's lien. He offered refuge to evangelical nobles and their followers. During the Thirty Years' War it was sacked by the Imperial General Bucquoy in 1620 and by the Swedes in 1645.

From 1663 the owners were the Lamberger , from 1754 the Bartenstein family and finally in 1879 the Counts Thurn-Valsassina .

description

With an area of 19 × 54 meters, Rastenberg Castle is a narrow, elongated complex with a forecourt and two small inner courtyards on the outermost spur end of a granite rock. Its appearance is shaped by the pentagonal, 27 meter high keep. Since it was never destroyed, it has retained its medieval character despite multiple renovations. It is one of the most important Romanesque architectural monuments in Lower Austria.
