geography

The ruin of the spur castle, consisting of a mighty keep , the walls of the three-storey palace and the castle walls, is enthroned on a rock spur on the right side above the valley of the Brtnice between the villages of Malé, Střížov, Přímělkov, Horní Smrčné , Dolní Smrčné and Panská Lhota.

history

The area belonged to the lands that Konstanze von Hungary gave in 1233 when the Porta Coeli monastery was founded . A little later, her son Wenceslas I wrested the area around Brtnice from the Cistercian monastery because he suspected silver deposits there. After unsuccessful mining attempts, Wenceslas left the Pirnitz Gau to Hrut von Kněžice (1213–1259). The Hrut, who came from the noble family of Hrutovice, had a protective castle built over the valley of the Pirnitz brook. The castle was first mentioned in 1289 as the property of the brothers Bernart, Zdislav and Vrš von Rukstein. The Lords of Hrutovice left the rule of Ruckstein, including the associated villages Stařeč , Slavice, Římov , Okříšky , Číchov , Petrovice , Jestřebí, Přibyslavice , Čáslavice , Dolní Smrčné, Panská Lhota, Uhřínovice, Markgrafice and Malé Johann Heinrich in 1360 . He bequeathed the goods to his son Johann Sobieslaus in 1371 , who pledged them to Hynko von Waldstein in 1378 .

At the end of the 14th century, Ruckstein became a bastion of the Moravian margraves Jobst and Prokop of Moravia in the power struggle with the prosperous city of Jihlava , which culminated in the attack of Prokops on the city in 1402. Ruckstein also had a small watchtower on the spur above the mouth of the Brtnice and Jihlava near Přímělkov. Hynko's son Heinrich von Waldstein was a supporter of Emperor Sigismund during the Hussite Wars and supported the city of Iglau. His sons Heinrich and Zdenko sided with the Hussites and significantly damaged Iglau. In 1444, the lower castle Ruckstein was named in a comparison, so that at that time there were two castle complexes. During the Bohemian-Hungarian War, Hynko von Waldstein fought on the side of Georg von Podiebrad . During this time, Ruckstein was captured and ruined by Matthias Corvinus' troops . The castle has been considered desolate since the 16th century.

Extensive archaeological research has been taking place in the castle since 1981 under the direction of Zdeněk Měřínský (Ústav archeologie a muzeologie FF MU Brno).
