Zolchow Castle

The remains of a fortified low castle from the late Middle Ages on the Großer Plessower See near the village of Kemnitz, which belongs to the city of Werder (Havel) , are referred to as Burg Zolchow .

Name derivation

The name Zolchow (before 1301 Zolgowe ) derived from Zolkow comes from a Slavic language and means place of the Solek or settlement of a man named Sulech . The name Solek stands for locator . Immediately at the crossing of the A 10 over the Plessower See there are wall remains of a dilapidated homestead. To this day, the remains of the ruins, partially covered by wild growth, between the motorway built in the 1930s and the nearby lake shore, are called Burg Zolchow by the local population .

history

Location of the castle ruins on the Great Plessower See

A long time ago there was a Heveller settlement at this important, because it is narrow, lake crossing . Historically, however, is only dated November 10, 1290. On this day Heinrich von Friesack (Henricus von Vriesick) transferred an eight Hufen (about 140 hectare) Lehnhof Zolgowe on the lake shore to the Brandenburg Canons . For them the area was a safe refuge during the recurring armed conflicts in the still young Margraviate of Brandenburg . During the 200 years of their rule on Zolchow , they dug a twelve-meter-wide trench with a drawbridge and an almost insurmountable earth wall (Latin: Vallum ) that ends on both sides in the Plessower See . The remains of the castle's cellar made of red bricks and worked field stones, which are still clearly visible today, are likely to date from the 13th century. In 1528 the canons of Brandenburg made a deal with the Junker Jakob von Rochow on Golzow. They exchanged the castle for surveys and income from the towns of Tremmen and Markee . From that time until the middle of the 18th century, von Rochows der Zolchower, Gollwitzer and Reckahner Linie lived in the fortified complex. On the much older cellar vaults, they had a multi-storey mansion with a steep pitched roof and tower-like bay windows built. Around 1750, the von Rochows moved into the manor Plessow. From then on, Zolchow only served as an outbuilding . In 1805, the wall was leveled and the former moat was filled in with the earth so that the site could be used for agriculture . The farm building was badly damaged in a fire in 1892 and the other structures also increasingly fell into disrepair. After the house had served as a grain and potato store for many years, it was demolished in 1916. The remaining smaller buildings were left to decay. What remains are the listed ruins of the basement rooms, poorly protected by a perforated fence and rotting tarpaulin.
