geography

Situation map

The Große Plessower See lies west of Werder / Havel in a line starting at the Schwielowsee with the Petzower Haussee, the Glindow-See and the now silted up Krielower See towards Schmergow almost parallel to the Havel. In the south it has a not always water-bearing ditch-like connection with Lake Glindow. This trench was dug seven hundred years ago to divert the lake floods. Since 1777 it has been draining northeast to the Havel near the village of Phöben over the peat ditch. The narrow northern section of the lake at the village of Kemnitz is crossed by the A 10 . There on the highway are ruins of the former so-called Zolchow Castle . To the west of the lake is the village of Plessow as the namesake for this body of water and the inaccessible Kleine Plessower See . In the south, on an isthmus between the Glindow Lake and Grand Lake Plessower which runs B 1 from west to east.

geology

The Great Plessower See lies in an Ice Age channel that was created around 19,000 years ago during the Vistula high glacial . It is separated from the Havel by a mountain range up to 70 meters high, which consists of the remains of edged moraines .

Hydromorphology

Water depths and stratification

The average water depth of the lake is 4.5 m and the deepest point is given as 16 m. The lake is described as mesotrophic and the water as slightly eutrophic . It is a body of water without stratification of the water masses in different temperature or convection levels. Due to the low proportion of phytoplankton, the visibility depths are two meters even in summer .

The bottom of the lake

The bottom of the lake is predominantly fine sand to coarse gravel. In some immediate and inaccessible bank areas there are muddy deposits from rotted plants.

small swimming area

The bank area / plants

The lake is almost completely surrounded by forest. The eastern gently sloping side is bordered by a swampy black alder forest. In front of the lake there is a wide belt of reeds with dense cattail stocks and rush vegetation (Cladium mariscus). In shallow water grows Kalmus . However, the reed belt has lost its vitality in recent years. There are only a few entrances to the lake that can be used as bathing areas. Further north the bank becomes higher and old oaks and beeches grow right up to the water. In most areas there are no reeds because of the steeply sloping bank. The western side is partly overgrown with conifers that were planted there during the rule of the von Rochow family . There used to be a vineyard near the lake, as a street name in Plessow still indicates today.

Wildlife

Due to the shallow water depth in the bank area and the existing belt of reeds, there are sufficient spawning zones in the lake. The lake is described as rich in fish. There are found all the important Central European species of fish in the lake, such as bream (sea bream), roach , rudd , tench , bream , perch , pike-perch , pike , catfish and eels . The pond frog should be mentioned as the main representative of the amphibian. Grass snakes are common. The most common waterfowl are Bless Coot and grebes found. Mute swans and mallards live on the lake. In the winter months the lake is an important resting place for migrating water birds. The Plessower See serves as a resting area for many migratory birds such as goosander , dwarf sergeant , little grebe and golden duck. Kingfishers are easy to spot . Egrets were seen in large numbers.

Early settlement

In the forest of Kemnitz on the northern lakeshore in the Vogelsangheide is one of the largest burial sites of the Semnones , with over 1000 sites from the first to fourth centuries of our era. In addition to weapons and Roman metal vessels, gold and silver jewelry were also found. Around the year 700 Slavic settlers, also called Wenden , reached the almost empty area between the Plessower See and the Havel. By mixing the remaining Teutons, who called the Havel Habula , the tribal name Heveller and thus the river name Havel arose in New High German .

Ecological

The water quality of the lake is checked regularly. Motor and sailing boats are not allowed on the lake.

tourism

The Werder lido is located on the east side of the lake. Except for the use of this and a few small bathing spots by the locals and day visitors from the surrounding area and a rowing boat rental from a fishing farm at the southern end of the lake, the water has no major tourist significance.
