The castle hill near Messenkamp is a small, abandoned low castle of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte), which is located near Messenkamp in the district of Schaumburg in Lower Saxony . It is believed that the fortifications were built around the year 1200.

The remains of the small moth enclosure are located about 600 meters south of Messenkamp in the lowland of the Rodenberger Aue , which flows past about 100 meters to the west. To the north, the facility is bounded by a straightened stream. The moat surrounding the hill is filled in, but can still be guessed as such.

The castle hill, which is up to 3.5 meters high, has a rectangular shape measuring around 18 × 28 meters. It consists of heaped clay and marl . Its soil is partially badly disturbed, especially by animal caves. Stone remains or finds are not known. The hill is covered with some tall conifers and shrubbery. An archaeological investigation has not yet taken place. Signs of a usual in such systems Vorburg are not present.
history
A mention of the castle complex in historical written sources has not survived. According to the local researcher Ludolf Parisius , the site of a Gogericht is said to have been located here, which was first mentioned in 1369. The castle hill is shown on maps of the Prussian land survey around 1900. It was not recognized as such until 1968 by an archaeologist from the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover .
