Burghard Burgemeister (born October 14, 1925 in Želízy near Mělník , Czechoslovakia ; † November 28, 2003 in Dresden ) was a German librarian and from 1959 to 1990 director of the Saxon State Library in Dresden.

Life

He spent childhood and youth in the Czechoslovak village of Želízy. Before graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was briefly captured by the Americans at the end of the war. After his return, Burgemeister completed a course for new teachers and worked as a middle school teacher in Kloschwitz near Plauen in the Vogtland from 1946 to 1948 . From 1948 to 1951 he studied at the pedagogical faculty of Leipzig University. Following the two-year library traineeship at the German State Library in Berlin , Burgemeister began his work as a specialist in 1953 at the Saxon State Library in Dresden and was appointed director in 1959. He held this office for 31 years. From 1962 to 1964 he worked on the reorganization of the university library in Cairo . In 1978 he was appointed honorary professor. Under Burgemeister's leadership, the library, which had been destroyed by bombing and had been housed in a former barracks in Dresden since 1947 and was greatly reduced, developed into one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the GDR. He paid special attention to state librarianship tasks (Saxon bibliography) and the collecting focus on fine arts, music and the history of technology. Burgemeister died in Dresden in 2003 and was buried in the Johannisfriedhof .
