The Kollmitz castle ruins are the ruins of a spur castle east of the village of Raabs an der Thaya on a steeply sloping rock spur around which the Thaya flows in a wide loop. It is located in the cadastral municipality of Kollmitzdörfl of the municipality of Raabs an der Thaya.

The cyclopean walls with two round corner towers are the remains of one of the largest, once spacious, medieval , most important castles in Lower Austria . The semicircular gate tower with pointed arched gate , the hunger tower , the keep and the remains of a two-story residential building as well as various other components have been preserved. In the northwest rises the so-called Bohemian Wall , which was built around 1450 against Georg von Podiebrad , about 110 meters long , which is in front of the castle at a distance of about 300 meters.

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In the 14th century there was a district court there , whose gallows stood with Ludweis. The rulership changed frequently ( Wallseer , Winkel, Kratzer, Thyrna) until the castle became the seat of the barons of Hofkirchen in 1411 . Wolfgang von Hofkirchen , the last Kollmitzer Hofkirchen, died in exile in Prague in 1611, where he was expelled because of his Protestant faith. During the Counter Reformation he was regarded by the Catholic Habsburgs as the ringleader of the Protestant aristocratic classes.

Kollmitz around 1672

Kollmitz was closely associated with Drösiedl for around 300 years . From 1570 Drösiedl was converted into a Renaissance castle and the old Kollmitz Castle might even have been abandoned if other owners had not lived there after the expulsion of the Hofkirche.

From 1616 the castle was owned by the Schütter, then the Schubhardt, from 1693 to the Pernegg monastery , and in 1708 the castle finally came into the possession of Franz Anton von Quarient and Raal (sometimes also Raall), owners of the Raab rulership , to whom it fell let. It is a legend that the castle was given up because of the roof tax . After 1708 there was simply no longer any use for the buildings, which is why they fell into disrepair or were even used as a quarry.

The castle had a predecessor on the other side of the valley west of Kollmitzgraben , whose location can hardly be recognized. This castle, which was only inhabited for about 150 years, was probably called Hauenstein. This old castle was only abandoned with the new building of Kollmitz 400 m to the east. All known mentions of Chalmunze etc. before 1250 refer to the Kollmitzberg near Amstetten . A dendrochronological study showed that the keep of the new Kollmitz Castle was completed in 1319.

The valley road that runs along the Thaya offers a good view of the castle complex.

The "Association for the Preservation of the Kollmitz Castle Ruins" has been looking after the facility since 1974, founded in the same year by the composer and local researcher Herbert Loskott . A snack station is operated on the ruins in summer.
