history

A Chunrad de Schöneberg is mentioned around 1209. 1256 "Schönperge" is mentioned. Schönberg was a castle of the Passau bishopric and is mentioned as such in the Second Passau Tradition Code of 1240 (Schonenberge, Sconenberge). The castle was administered by burgraves . Well-known are Ulrich der Lechner (1391), Wenzel der Panhalm (1431), Hanns der Hollerberger (1433) and Dankwart Herleinsperger (1436). In 1462 Schönberg becomes a princely fiefdom . The castle was abandoned in the 16th century; why is not known. Already on the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674 in his "Topographia Austriae superioris modernae" Schönberg (Shenberg) appears as a ruin.

Schönberg castle ruins today

The substructure is still recognizable on the castle hill on the orographic left bank of the Große Mühl despite recent leveling. Minor wall remains made of rubble stones ( wall corner, lining walls ) can be found on the steep drop. Ceramic finds and finds of iron arrows have also been made here. Remnants of the wall that still existed earlier were used to build houses in 1920. From the Große Mühl there is still an interesting view of the castle ruins. A plaque on Burgplatz reminds of the former castle.
