The Zöch castle ruins are the ruins of a Niederungsburg in the municipality of Altenberg near Linz in the Urfahr-Umgebung district in Upper Austria . The name of the facility with "Zöch" comes from the 19th century. The original name of the Altenberg castle is not known.

history

There are two documents from the castle. Probably in 1245 Karolus de Maltenperg is a witness to a document about the enfeoffment of Gundacker III. mentioned by Steyr and Steinbach with the rule of Wildberg . In 1248 a Perhtoldus de Altenberge is named. Conrad von Altenperch is mentioned on a document from Wilhering Abbey around 1250 . In 1364, Herman der Geyczesterer names "vnser Ansidel (and) the hof dacz dem Altenperg", at that time a fiefdom of the Starhembergers . A Charl of Geyczensterer owned the seat on the Öde in 1377 in the Edt district of the Altenberg community. Zöch belonged to the rule of Riedegg and was named after the colliery (brotherhood) that owned the property until 1848.

The remains of the castle wall are below Altenberg; probably the seat was surrounded by a pond. A pond is still preserved here today; In the 1970s, the ditch leading around the ruins was flooded, so that no direct access to the walls is possible today.

The Niederungsburg has been preserved up to the level of a first floor. The side walls are almost completely missing. In addition to the outer walls, there is also an inner wall with beam holes. Presumably, the building had another floor. In the preserved part of a side wall there is a smoothed corbel on which a bay window was presumably seated.
