The Herrenhof castle site is an abandoned high medieval fortification on a hill in the Lichtentanne area of the municipality of Probstzella in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

The tower hill castle (Motte) is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains , in the center of Lichtentanne (Rundlingsdorf) and is recognizable as a hill. Remains of the fortifications and ditches are still there, parts of the castle site are modernly built over.
history
Little is known about the origins of the castle. Until 1337 it served as a self-fortification for the local nobility from Lichtentanne and Schmiedebach and from then on belonged to the Count of Weimar-Orlamünde , after an inheritance in 1414 of the Graefenthaler line. Count Otto XI. lived here after he sold Wespenstein Castle to the Wettins . In 1425 Lichtentanne fell to Wettin and became a manor under the electoral Saxon fiefdom. The lords of Koenitz became fiefdoms . After them, members of the knight families von Vippach (1570), von Watzdorf (1612), von Plassenberg (1730), von Breitenbauch (1740), von Schönfeld (1783) and von Holleben (1794) sat here . Today the castle site is a protected ground monument .
