Burkhard Schittny

Burkhard Schittny (* 1966 in Gütersloh ) is a German photographer and artist .

Life

Schittny first studied fashion design at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen before he switched the major to photography . He completed his diploma in 1997 with a photographic work inspired by the painter Francis Bacon .

Three years later, a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) enabled him to study fine art at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London . In addition to photography, he concentrated here on the moving image and dealing with his own body. For the master’s thesis, two expressive video performances were created in which he himself appeared as the protagonist.

From 2010 he devoted himself to the topic of power, in particular the abuse of power in war politics and the resulting influence on society. Under the title Erbe der Angst - The War in Me , a multi-part series of documentary-conceptual works was created about his father's theaters of war and his mother's expulsion as a result of the Second World War . The group of works “Legacy Projects” was formed from this. In addition to the historical approach, it now includes works related to war and power that also address current events and social phenomena.

Schittny's artistic repertoire now includes photography, video, sound, performance , installation and text-based embossing / photo work. His work has been recognized with prizes and awards and exhibited both nationally and internationally. Some works are in collections.

In addition to his freelance artistic work, Schittny has also taken on visiting professorships and regularly realized photographic commissioned works. His customers included a. The New York Times Magazine , New York Magazine , Wired , Fortune . Schittny lives with his family in Hamburg .
