Burkittsville is a town in Frederick County in the US state of Maryland . At the 2000 census , the community had 171 inhabitants on an area of 1.1 km². Burkittsville is on the Washington County border near Gathland State Park .
Burkittsville became famous for the pseudo documentary " Blair Witch Project " from 1999, which is set here, but for the most part was not made here.
history
Burkittsville was founded in 1824 in two parts by the two landowners Major Joshua Harley (western half as: "Harley's Post Office") and Henry Burkitt. Four years later (after Joshua Harley left), the remaining Henry Burkitt also renamed the western part Burkittsville. In the following three decades this place grew into a normal community with shops, stores, a blacksmith and tannery as well as a school and two churches.
During the American Civil War , the place was occupied by the Confederate Army in 1862 and after a bloody exchange of blows with the Union Army on Sunday, September 14th, more than 300 wounded from both sides had to be cared for, and the two churches and the school house became the makeshift hospital - these historic buildings have been preserved to this day.
After the overwhelming success of the Blair Witch Project , the city was overrun with fans. Essentially, however, the film was shot in Seneca Creek State Park , Maryland. Souvenir hunters stole the entrance signs to Burkittsville several times. In 2000, the sequel to the Blair Witch Project , Blair Witch 2, was also filmed in Burkittsville.
