Buçaco is a small town in Portugal, in the Centro Region . Throughout its history, the place was also spelled Buzaco , Buzzaco , and finally in the form Bussaco until the spelling reform of 1911 .

History and meaning

The area was first recorded as Buzaco in the 10th century. The name probably goes back to the monks of the nearby Benedictine monastery of Vacariça and the name they used for a local cave, which they also called Subiaco or Sublaco based on the Roman Subiaco . The Convento de Santa Cruz do Buçaco , built in the 17th century, took over the name that was already in use for the surrounding forest area as Mata do Buçaco .

On September 27, 1810 , the Battle of Buçaco took place nearby , in which a British-Portuguese army under General Wellington defeated the French invading army under Marshal Masséna .

Buçaco is known today especially for the battle and for the local mountain range of the Serra do Buçaco . As a result, the place name also became the eponymous reference point for other places and buildings in the vicinity, such as the Palácio Hotel do Buçaco . The name is also used in regional tourism marketing.
