Geographical location
The Butterberg is about halfway between Ilsenburg in the west-northwest and Drübeck in the east-southeast. To the northeast, its terrain merges into the Wahrberg ( 274.9 m above sea level ), to the west it drops into the Ilse valley and to the east into that of the Nonnenbach . The mountain is steeper on its south side than on the north side. State road 85 runs south in an east-west direction and a little to the north - beyond the Danstedt – Vienenburg railway line - federal road 6 .

From the Butterberg the Harz foreland and mountain ranges of the Harz can be seen. The view of Ilsenburg is almost completely blocked by the nearby Eichholz forest . The view of Drübeck is possible.

The Butterberg is a little more than 280 m high. A measuring point ( 279.1 m above sea level ) is located on a road to the northeast of its summit .
