The Càrn Eige , sometimes also spelled Càrn Eighe , is the highest mountain in northern Scotland, north of the Great Glen . It is in the Council area Highland on the border between the Area Committees Inverness and Ross and Cromarty , in the former territory of the Chisholm - Clans . To the north of the mountain lies Glen Cannich with Loch Mullardoch , south of Glen Affric with Loch Affric .
The mountain is very remote, about ten kilometers from the nearest major road. However, there is the Alltbeithe youth hostel in Glen Affric , which is a little closer. In terms of its topographical prominence of 1148 m, the mountain ranks second in the British Isles after Ben Nevis .
