Coenraad Jacob Temminck

Coenraad Jacob Temminck (born March 31, 1778 in Amsterdam , † January 30, 1858 in Lisse ) was a Dutch zoologist specializing in ornithology .

Live and act

Temminck was the first director of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (Reich Museum for Natural History, now naturalis ) in Leiden from 1820 until his death . His work Manuel d'ornithologie ou Tableau systematique des oiseaux qui se trouvent en Europe (1815–40) was the standard work on European birds for decades . In particular, he studied the pigeons .

He had inherited the large collection of specimens of birds from his father Jacob Temminck (1748-1822), who was treasurer of the Dutch East India Company . In addition to birds, he also dealt with mammals and is considered the first to describe many species , including the Iberian lynx ( Lynx pardinus ) and the African wild dog ( Lycaon pictus ).

Darwin versus Temminck

In 1868 the British naturalist Charles Darwin incorrectly denied the existence of a tailless mutant of the Ceylon chicken that Temminck had described in 1807.
