César de Cock (* July 23, 1823 in Ghent ; † July 16, 1904 there ) was a Belgian landscape painter who worked in France .

Life and origin

César de Cock was born as the younger brother of Xavier de Cock (1818-1896). He studied music at the Conservatory in Ghent and painting at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Gand under Félix De Vigne (1806–1862). In 1855 he left for Paris , where his brother Xavier was already working.

Because of progressive deafness, he has since then dealt exclusively with painting. He became a student of Charles-François Daubigny and Louis Français .

He became friends with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot . He spent a lot of time in picturesque places such as Barbizon , Gasny in Normandy and Veules-les-Roses . From 1857 he exhibited regularly in salons and won medals in 1867 and 1869. In 1880 he settled permanently in Ghent.

During the war of 1870 he fled to Deurle in Belgium. In 1880 he settled permanently in Ghent, but often painted on the banks and around the Lys .

In 1900 he was appointed officer of the Leopold Order .

De Cock often worked with his brother Xavier. His daughter Elisabeth De Cock (1883–1969) also became a painter.
