Cătălin-Pantele Răcănel (born September 23, 1976 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian - German football player and current coach .

Career

Răcănel grew up with his parents in his hometown of Bucharest. In 1990 his club Viitorul Bucharest took part in a youth tournament in France . On the way back to Romania, the coach stopped in Saarbrücken , where Răcănel's uncle and aunt lived. They invited him to spend two weeks vacation with them and later convinced him not to return to Romania. Răcănel stayed in Germany and played in youth for SG Erbach and FC 08 Homburg . His first position in the men's division was the regional division Borussia Neunkirchen , with whom he was relegated in 1996 from the Regionalliga West / Südwest . After four years he switched to SV Elversberg . After only one year he moved to the relay competitor Eintracht Trier , for whom he completed 34 games in the following two years and scored two goals. For the 2001/02 season he was signed by the newly promoted Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli . Here he was unable to assert himself and only made seven appearances in the Bundesliga. After another seven games in the following season in the 2nd Bundesliga , he went back to Eintracht Trier. There Răcănel was able to fight for a regular place and came in the two following years to 65 missions, in which he scored 13 goals. After Eintracht Trier was relegated, he moved to LR Ahlen , where he played 28 games and scored one goal. After relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, he went to the fourth-class Oberliga Nordost for FC Sachsen Leipzig . After two years in which he was able to score five goals in 40 games, he moved to 1. FC Magdeburg at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . Here he became a regular player and played in 33 of the 34 games in which he scored four goals. In the following season he made 27 missions with one goal. Răcănel's contract with 1. FC Magdeburg was not renewed at the end of the 2010 season. For the 2011/12 season Răcănel returned to Borussia Neunkirchen. At the end of the 11/12 season he ended his professional career. In 2012 he was the coach of Borussia Neunkirchen for a total of three months. Since then he has been active as a player and coach for SV Rot-Weiss Türkgücü Wittlich, SG Niederkail and currently for FV Oberbexbach.

Others

Răcănel gave up his Romanian citizenship in 2005 after having previously become a German citizen.
