CODE_n is a global innovation hub for digital pioneers that was initiated in 2011 as a brand by GFT Technologies SE and its then CEO Ulrich Dietz . CODE_n (GFT Innovations GmbH) has been a 100% subsidiary of the GFT Group since 2015. Since January 2018 the company name has been changed to CODE_n GmbH.

A core element of CODE_n is an annual competition for start-up companies with business models based on digital technologies. Started at CeBIT , CODE_n organized a multi-day trade fair and conference program over four years, in which the winner of the competition is awarded and visitors, partners and exhibitors have special access to topics of digital transformation . The other CODE_n elements such as innovation services, spaces and events are intended to bring start-ups and established companies together.

In September 2016, CODE_n removed the main event format from CeBIT and founded the new.New Festival . This took place for the first time in September 2016 in the Center for Art and Media .

history

Code_n was officially founded by GFT Technologies SE on September 14, 2011 at a press conference in Berlin. Partners in the first year were Deutsche Messe AG , Ernst & Young , Fujitsu Technology Solutions , BITKOM and the Center for Art and Media Technology .

Shaping Mobile Life

Under the motto "Shaping Mobile Life", Code_n was looking for young companies with innovative business solutions based on mobile technologies. From the 400 applicants from 42 countries, 50 finalists were selected who were able to present their company in the Code_n exhibition hall at CeBIT. Jürgen Mayer H. and Tobias Rehberger implemented the design of the exhibition area .

Intelligent Apps from Hamburg was recognized as the winner of the Code_n12 Award for the myTaxi app : The jury included Ulrich Dietz (GFT Technologies SE), Lars Hinrichs (HackFwd), Gabriele Fischer ( Brand eins ), Carsten Knop ( Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ), and Paulus Neef (PQuadra), Joseph Reger (Fujitsu Technology Solutions), Jens-Uwe Sauer (Seedmatch) and Peter Weibel (Center for Art and Media Technology).

Smart Solutions for Global Challenges

The motto of the second edition of the Code_n innovation competition was “Smart Solutions for Global Challenges”. We were looking for digital business models that address the challenges associated with the energy transition. The Code_n13 Award was given in the categories Emerging Company and Startup. The winners were Changers.com from Potsdam and Greenclouds from the Netherlands.

Artist Vincent Tavenne was responsible for the design of the 5,000 square meter exhibition hall at CeBIT. The visitors and conference participants at Code_n included Angela Merkel , Donald Tusk , Philipp Rösler and Peter Altmaier .

Driving the data revolution

Big Data was the main theme of Code_n in 2014. 50 finalists from 17 countries were selected from 450 submissions on the topic of “Driving the Data Revolution”. The Code_n14 Award, endowed with 30,000 euros, went to the company Viewsy from Great Britain. A special award went to the US company AutoGrid.

In addition to Deutsche Messe and Ernst & Young, Google , Salesforce.com , Continental AG and Dassault Systèmes, among others , were involved as partners at CeBIT 2014 . Federal Minister of Economics Sigmar Gabriel and Apple founder Steve Wozniak were among the 17,000 visitors to Code_n Halle .

Into the Internet of Things

The fourth edition of the CODE_n competition had the motto “Into the Internet of Things” and looked for young companies with business models related to the Internet of Things . Over 450 startups had applied. The best 50 applicants received a free exhibition space in the CODE_n hall at CeBIT, which took place from March 16 to 20, 2015 at the Hanover exhibition center. Among other things, the interactive installation Robochop by Munich designers Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram could be seen there. In addition, the companies Trumpf, EnBW , Salesforce, Google, EY, Kuka and Accenture presented themselves as partners this year . Over 85,000 visitors were counted in the hall, including the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel and the EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger .

As the winner of the startup competition this year, the Berlin startup Relayr was awarded prize money of 30,000 euros for its Wunderbar product.

Unveiling Digital Disruption

As an independent festival at the ZKM Karlsruhe, the search was on for the world's best young companies on the topics of photonics , Industry 4.0 , mobility , fintech and health tech. From 380 international applications from 40 countries, 52 finalists (13 per competition cluster) from 11 countries were selected and invited to Karlsruhe. The special communication platform within the ZKM was designed by the berline designer Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge.

The respective competition clusters were sponsored by Hewlett Packard Enterprise , GFT Technologies, B. Braun Melsungen and Trumpf (company) .

Further elements of CODE_n

In 2015, an innovation campus was opened in Stuttgart under the name Code_n Spaces, where young and experienced companies work together on future digital topics. Innovation departments of established companies, such as B. Daimler AG , Bosch , EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg or Südwestbank use the space designed by Tobias Rehberger to initiate and expand their digital innovation activities, get inspiration or use the space as an offsite location. Together with startups from the fields of industry, the automotive industry, robotics, health care and hotel business as well as experienced managers in supervisory board positions, a mutually supportive community is created.

From 2015, events for start-ups and established companies will also be held under the Code_n Events label.
