Taxi app

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A taxi app (also known as a taxi ordering app ) is a mobile app for ordering a taxi without a phone call.

This technology, which emerged in 2007/2008 with the advent of modern smartphones , was made possible by the availability of precise automatic location determination and faster mobile data connections, automation in the taxi business and the increasing number of smartphones. There are now a number of taxi apps, but only a few of them have become more widespread. In 2016, 8% of citizens across the EU used taxi apps. In Germany it was 3% and in Great Britain 27%.

background

In contrast to voice switching, which was common in the past, the switching of an order between the radio center and the vehicle is largely automated in Europe . For this, the taxis need a GPS- assisted switching device with a data connection to the switching server, usually via the cellular network (less often via company radio ).

The acceptance of customer orders can also be automated, for example via internet orders, voice computers , telephone number recognition (telebooking), automatic call systems (for example in hotels) or smartphone app.

Many apps offer additional features such as a taxi radar with available taxis, calculation of the fare or live tracking of the taxi when arriving.

There are now only app providers who no longer offer any other ordering option - for example via a call center - and who are in competition with conventional radio control centers.

Radio control centers usually receive a monthly contribution from taxi operators. This happens either in the form of a fixed contribution per vehicle or depending on the number of orders placed. With exclusive app providers, the entrepreneurs pay a fee for each trip arranged. Some taxi companies have banned their members from using app providers such as Mytaxi.

Since the costs of mediation are charged to the taxi company, taxi apps and taxi orders are usually free for customers.

When ordering, the position is usually determined on a map and this position is assigned to an address that can be changed or annotated. When ordering, only the address details and no geographical coordinates are transmitted to the head office and the driver. This order therefore only works with unique addresses and not in large locations without addressing, for example airports, some industrial areas etc.

The disadvantage is: Many more complex driving orders cannot be automatically accepted or conveyed, such as unclear addresses, certain departure points or destinations, special payment processes or extra services that have to be discussed with the driver.

When it comes to privacy, there is also a difference to ordering by phone: Bloomberg.com reported on a student who now uses an app to book taxis to drive home instead of being picked up by their mother. According to the author, being able to list past journeys in the app and thus being able to monitor his children is an advantage for parents compared to ordering a taxi by phone.

criticism

From taxi centers and the Federal Association of Taxi and Rental Cars (BZP), an association of taxi centers and similar companies, there was criticism in 2011 of those of the app providers who compete with the radio centers and their apps: They are not cheaper. The existence of many radio control centers would be endangered by the apps.

There was criticism in 2012 by the BZP of investors such as Daimler , Telekom and KfW-Bank for the millions in support from “mytaxi”. The BZP is now a cooperation partner of a taxi app competing with Mytaxi.

Common apps

Standalone apps for taxi centers

Some headquarters have their own apps, which are technically identical to national apps ( branding ).

International

Gett

Gett was founded in Israel in 2010 . Gett only has drivers licensed to carry passengers under contract and is based on a commission basis of 10%. Delivery services and logistics services are also provided. At the end of 2016, 50,000 drivers were employed in a number of large cities, mainly in Israel and Russia , as well as the USA and Great Britain. Volkswagen AG joined the company in 2016 .

The app is available for Android and iOS.

eCab

The eCab app was developed by an association of local taxi companies (eCab Alliance) in France , and embedded in TAXIS G7 , a leading European provider. It was available in 16 French cities in 2016, a few other major European cities in six countries, three in Canada and 24 in India , with a total of around 100,000 taxis.

The app is available in English, French and Dutch.

Hailo

Hailo is a taxi app with offers in the UK, Ireland and Spain that originally started in London and Dublin . The company withdrew from the USA in 2014 after failures.

In July 2016, Mytaxi and Hailo announced that they would merge. The name and technology of Mytaxi are to be retained and Hailo's offers are to be migrated to Mytaxi.

Free Now

Free Now ("Mytaxi" until the beginning of July 2019) arranges two types of journeys: regular taxi journeys and, in some cities, additional taxi journeys in which strangers get on during the journey. From the end of July 2019, rental cars with a driver will also be brokered in some cities.

Mytaxi was introduced in Hamburg in 2010 by the startup Intelligent Apps GmbH , initially under the name 1TouchTaxi . Intelligent Apps has belonged entirely to Moovel GmbH, a subsidiary of Daimler AG, since 2014 .

The app was first introduced in Hamburg, then in Cologne, Bonn and Berlin and was available in October 2014 in over 40 cities in Germany, as well as internationally in Austria ( Vienna , Graz , Salzburg ), Switzerland ( Zurich ), Spain ( Barcelona , Madrid ), Poland ( Warsaw ) and the USA (Washington). In July 2012, Mytaxi had around 15,000 connected taxis in Germany and had already been downloaded around 1.7 million times. The offer was gradually expanded to Australia (license), Italy, Portugal and Sweden by 2015.

In July 2016, Mytaxi and Hailo announced that they would merge. Hailo was active in Great Britain, Ireland and Spain as well as in the USA. The name and technology of Mytaxi are to be retained and Hailo's offers are to be migrated to Mytaxi. After the merger, Mytaxi claims that roughly 100,000 taxi drivers will be registered, which corresponds to around 40,000 taxis. In February 2017, the merger with Taxibeat , the largest taxi app provider in Greece (8,000 connected taxi drivers) took place.

Other taxi apps often work together with the existing taxi centers, which results in further service options (queries, lost property, other services). No registration is necessary for the customer. Mytaxi only works with individual taxi companies in which every interested taxi operator and, subsequently, his employed drivers register with Mytaxi. Since Mytaxi does not work with the existing radio control centers, drivers have to download a special driver app. Customers also have to register if they want to use the app. Daimler AG was criticized for its participation by a merger of taxi companies and similar companies. Mytaxi said: "The taxi companies have so far been able to dictate their demands to the taxi operators and are now afraid because they will get competition from us".

In mid-2012, options for pre-ordering and mobile payment were integrated. At CeBIT 2012, Mytaxi was honored as the most innovative business idea among 50 international participants with the CODE_n12 Award endowed with 25,000 euros . In May 2015, there was an innovation that trips with Mytaxi drivers can also be paid for with the app if you have not ordered the taxi via the app, B. waved at the roadside or just got on at the airport taxi stand.

In Berlin, taxi drivers ordered via Mytaxi needed an average of 4.6 minutes to travel to in a test byvergleich.org. Netzwelt found in October 2017, after testing three taxi apps, that Mytaxi was the most successful taxi app.

Mytaxi has been offering the Match service since December 4th, 2017 . This function makes it possible to share a taxi ride with one or more unfamiliar passengers who want to get on along the route and be transported in the same direction. This makes travel costs cheaper for passengers - this is intended to attract new, financially weak customer groups who have rarely used a taxi before. The offer is initially only valid in Hamburg, but other large cities such as Berlin and Munich are to follow soon.

Mytaxi is available for Apple iOS, Android, Blackberry 10 and Windows Phone 7.x and 8.x, as well as a web app. It provides the languages German, English, French and Spanish for the user interface, except for the web app, which is only available in German and English.

New branding

In February 2019 it was announced that the majority shareholder of Intelligent Apps, Daimler AG, was joining forces with the BMW Group and that the two would share their "existing offers in the areas of car sharing, ride-hailing , parking, charging and multimodality" under a common brand family would bundle. Mytaxi will be renamed " Free Now " in the course of the year to become part of the network of five new brands: " Reach Now (Multimodal), Charge Now (Charging), Free Now (Ride-Hailing), Park Now (Parking) and Share Now (CarSharing) ". The app's logo and appearance would also change.

In July 2019 the name was changed to "Free Now". Shortly afterwards, at the end of July, as announced earlier, the restriction of the brokerage of journeys to taxis is to end. The app should also offer the customer rental cars with a driver ( radio rental car).

criticism

At Mytaxi, data protection is criticized. Extensive data of the taxi driver, consisting of username, user ID, first and last name, rating, photo and telephone number are transmitted to the passenger; likewise, the driver can be identified and tracked by anyone on the map. From the passenger's point of view, the transmission of the telephone number to the driver and the storage of the position data are objectionable in contrast to taxi centers.

A new remuneration system for the arranged trips, which has been based on a kind of auction since February 2014 (3–15% of the fare had to be paid - freely selectable - to Mytaxi), which means (in addition to other factors such as driver quality assessment or spatial proximity), rather the The highest bidder was offered a ride, met with widespread displeasure from the associated taxi drivers. This type of unpopular remuneration has been abolished since July 2015 and a fixed percentage (7%) of the fare (and 7% of the tip in the case of cashless payment) is now calculated as a commission.

From January 2016, Mytaxi temporarily leased the station forecourt in Cologne. Every taxi (even if it is not connected to Mytaxi) should pay a binding fee of 120 euros a year to Mytaxi for a permit sticker if it wanted to pick up passengers at the train station. After protests by many Cologne taxi drivers, persistent ignoring of the ban on keeping the vehicle ready in spite of the missing sticker and a legal review by the city of Cologne, the controversial regulation was lifted again in mid-February 2016.

Mytaxi does not provide service numbers in the app or on the website about which problems or questions the user can communicate. Especially when it comes to complaints or lost property, it seems as if these daily tasks would remain with the existing local taxi offices, saving costs and resources.

taxi.eu

taxi.eu is an international network of taxi radio centers.

The Austrian company Austrosoft / FMS from Vienna developed the app in 2011 in cooperation with European radio control centers in around 60 cities - including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Vienna, Amsterdam, Zurich, Copenhagen , Brussels and Prague . The company for switching systems has been offering electronic taxi fleet management since the 1980s, a previous app from taxi.eu already existed in 2010.

As of November 2014, around 62,000 taxis (and around 160,000 drivers) in 100 cities were integrated into the system. With the help of other taxi networks and the International Road Transport Union , extensions to the USA and Great Britain were agreed in 2014. In Germany, for example, 90% of all taxis could be ordered via taxi.eu at the time - among other things through a cooperation within the framework of the German Taxi Service Network  (DTN). In 2016, the offer was available in twelve European countries. Through a cooperation with a Paris taxi center that operates the taxi app eCab , taxi.eu can offer thousands of Paris taxis.

At taxi.eu, taxi operators are still registered with a taxi center. If a taxi is only needed later, a pre-order can be made. In places where it is not possible to order a taxi fully automatically with taxi.eu, the telephone numbers of the local taxi offices are displayed.

Payment is made to the driver throughout Europe, as well as in the four largest German cities and six other German cities, alternatively via the app with PayPal or credit card (as of March 2017).

taxi.eu is available for Apple iOS ( iPhone and iPad ) and Android . Ordering on laptops, PCs and mobile platforms such as Blackberry is also possible without an app via a website that looks the same with conventional browsers . The user interface is available in German, English, French, Danish and Dutch.

Over

Uber , a company founded in California in 2009 with European headquarters in Amsterdam, offers a worldwide app for a transport service with wireless rental cars ( Uber Black ), private individuals ( Uber Pop ), wireless rental cars (UberX) and licensed taxis ( Uber Taxi ). It was represented in around 500 cities in mid-2016.

The at Uber Pop commissioned and contracted individuals carry out the orders with their own car. Customers registered with Uber order via smartphone and pay cashless using the app. This type of brokerage - known as a ride-sharing or share economy - is controversial because these drivers may lack many of the requirements necessary for commercial passenger transport (e.g. eye test , business registration , suitable insurance). The Uber Pop service is therefore not offered in a number of countries, including Germany, for legal reasons.

UberX is brokered using approved wireless rental cars. For the market launch in 2015, artificially reduced prices are often offered below cost, which should encourage people to switch from conventional transport services to Uber. The practice that at UberX drivers can accept orders from the company headquarters without instructions was legally prohibited on December 19, 2019 with reference to the Passenger Transport Act, which does not allow such a thing. The court also criticized the fact that Uber sets the prices and not the rental car companies commissioned, and that Uber does not adequately monitor the companies' compliance with the obligation to return. Uber has switched its mediation process to this and is now offering the service in this new form. Drivers can only see an order after it has passed through the company headquarters. Furthermore, Uber now only works with one company per city. This takes on essential tasks such as setting prices. In addition, Uber's switching system is now monitoring compliance with the return obligation and, according to Uber, drivers would be excluded if they did not comply.

The app is available for iOS, Android and Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile.

Germany

BetterTaxi

BetterTaxi offers Germany-wide taxi booking via app. It is the only app that offers both taxi and fixed-price trips across Germany. The fixed-price trips are particularly suitable for airport transfers. However, the prices are always marginal, and with "Premium Service" offers also significantly above the local taxi tariffs . The company processes the orders in cooperation with the local taxi centers. The Berlin startup cooperates with the three large German taxi technology providers Austrosoft / FMS, GefoS and Seibt & Straub as well as with the German Taxi and Rental Car Association (BZP) and commission-based agents such as Talixo.

BetterTaxi is available for iPhone, iPad and as a web app.

Cabdo

Cabdo is a local, company-related app from Dortmund through which taxis and wireless rental cars can be ordered. The customer can select the type of vehicle in the app. The booking and payment are made entirely through this.

CleverShuttle

CleverShuttle's headquarters at Leipzig Central Station

CleverShuttle was founded in Berlin in 2014 as GHT Mobility GmbH by Bruno Ginnuth, Jan Hofmann and Slava Tschurilin. The company offers a ride pooling service. This means that with the help of an algorithm, unfamiliar passengers with similar routes are bundled into car pools. The bundling of individual passengers in just one vehicle should contribute to reducing individual traffic, according to the company. The fare is fixed per passenger and should be around half of what a taxi with only one passenger would cost. After several months of testing in Berlin and Munich, regular operations began in Leipzig and Munich in early 2016 , followed by Hamburg and Berlin. CleverShuttle has also been active in Stuttgart, Dresden and Frankfurt am Main since 2018. In Leipzig and Dresden the local companies are a joint venture of GHT Mobility GmbH and the publishing company Madsack . CleverShuttle started operations in Kiel in July 2019. The location on the fjord is operated jointly by GHT Mobility GmbH and Kieler Nachrichten . CleverShuttle started operations in Düsseldorf in January 2020 . The company is cooperating here with Stadtwerke Düsseldorf , which provides both the parking spaces and the charging infrastructure.

Only hydrogen and electric drives are used at CleverShuttle. The fleet consists primarily of the Nissan Leaf , a purely electric small car, and the Toyota Mirai powered by a fuel cell . The cars are legally classified as rental cars . The drivers have, according to the legal regulations, a passenger transport license .

After Deutsche Bahn AG had already got on board as an investor in 2017, it took over the shares of the other investors in autumn 2018 and thus became the majority owner of GHT Mobility GmbH. According to its own information, Deutsche Bahn wants to add the last mile to or from the train station.

In October 2019 it was announced that operations in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart will be discontinued. Shortly afterwards, CleverShuttle announced a new investor. Mitsui Bussan , a Japanese conglomerate, took over 12% of the shares in GHT Mobility GmbH. Deutsche Bahn remains the majority owner of the company .

On June 26, 2020 Clevershuttle announced that the offer in Berlin, Dresden and Munich would be discontinued for economic reasons. At the other locations, the strong regional partnerships ensured the continued existence.

The CleverShuttle app is available for Apple iOS or Android .

Shuttle pool

ShuttlePool is the app for booking planned or spontaneous driving services in the city, airport transfers, company driving services or for other occasions. Fares are calculated according to distance and travel time after entering the complete start and destination address and displayed to the customer as a fixed final price. Optionally, services such as "accompaniment at the destination" as assistance from the driver or "child seats" etc. can be booked. Payments can be made by cash, PayPal, credit card or by invoice.

Independent taxi or rental car companies with official permission under the Passenger Transport Act who have previously registered with the ShuttlePilot app are connected to ShuttlePool. This app for drivers is used to accept orders.

The ShuttlePool service is available at all major German locations and, according to the company, is also offered in neighboring countries, as well as on the Spanish island of Mallorca .

ShuttlePool-App and ShuttlePilot-App are available for Android and Apple iOS.

taxi.de

In collaboration with radio control centers and taxi companies, Talex mobile solutions GmbH also developed a taxi app. As a freemium provider, taxi.de is the only provider to provide the brokerage service free of charge for taxi drivers. The very fact that every driver is free to register with taxi.de is also rare among German taxi apps, because most of the others only mediate taxis that belong to centers allied with them. Taxi.de was founded in June 2012.

The user interface is available in German. If a taxi is only needed later, a pre-order can be made. There is also a fare calculator.

Drivers who use the card reader provided by taxi.de free of charge can pay by Girocard , Visa card and Mastercard .

taxi.de is available for Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android. Ordering on laptops, PCs and mobile platforms such as BlackBerry is also possible without an app via a website that looks the same with conventional browsers.

Taxi Germany

The app is offered by a joint service company of the taxi companies. According to the company, the app works in all cities with more than 5000 inhabitants. That's roughly two and a half thousand cities. Before placing your first order, your name and telephone number must be entered; registration is not necessary. The app determines the location of the user, shows the surrounding drivers and the progress of the order with the estimated time of arrival. This order via the app goes to 79 cities. In the remaining cities, a call is made to the local taxi center instead. The Taxi Germany app is connected to the nationwide booking network of the German Taxi and Rental Car Association and a member of the international IRU network. In some cities, journeys can be paid for by credit card directly through the app.

The app currently exists for the Android and iOS operating systems.

United Kingdom

Kabbee

In London , Kabbee has 4,000 minicab drivers under contract.

North America

Lyft

Lyft was founded in 2012 in San Francisco , California. The offer was already available in 200 American cities in 2015. A cooperation with General Motors has existed since 2016.

In 2018, the company had sales of $ 2.2 billion in the United States and Canada, but posted a loss of $ 911 million. When it went public in March 2019, the company was valued at $ 24 billion.
