Collagen type XVI, alpha 1 is a fibrillenassoziiertes collagen that the gene COL16A1 is encoded. It forms homotrimers , which in turn form type XVI collagen fibrils .

properties

Type XVI, alpha 1 collagen is mainly found in fibroblasts and keratinocytes ; also in the smooth muscles and in the amnion . It is involved in cell adhesion and induces integrin- mediated cellular responses such as proliferation . Collagen XVI may act as a substrate for the adhesion and invasion of tumor cells in connective tissue . Thus it plays an important role in the interaction of the connective tissue with the extracellular matrix .

In addition, collagen promotes XVI the life of intestinal sub epithelial myofibroblasts (engl. Intestinal subepithelial myofibroblasts , ISEMF) in the intestinal wall by the focal adhesions interaction cell-matrix stabilized by, but α by the recruitment of the integrin 1 β 1 in the Tips of the focal contacts.

The NC11 domain of collagen XVI serves as a potential biomarker for squamous cell carcinoma and triggers vascular mimicry by upregulating the endothelial receptors VEGFR1 , VEGFR2 and uPAR .
