Berlin's Christopher Street Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berlin Christopher Street Day (also CSD Berlin ) is an annual demonstration in Berlin for the rights of lesbians , gays , bisexuals , transgender , intersexual and queer people.

The CSD Berlin is one of the largest street parades in Berlin and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

The CSD Berlin has had a fixed route again since 2013. This starts at the corner of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimsthaler Straße . From there, the 5.2 kilometer long parade route leads over Breitscheidplatz and Wittenbergplatz to Nollendorfplatz where it bends to the left in the direction of Lützowplatz . Then it goes on along the Klingelhöferstrasse and the Hofjägerallee past the Victory Column and over the Strasse des 17. Juni to the Brandenburg Gate , where the final rally takes place.

history

The first Berlin CSD took place on June 30, 1979 in West Berlin with the motto "Gay Pride". 400 people took part. At the same time, the Transgeniale CSD marched from 1998 to 2016 . Around the event, the Lesbian and Gay City Festival and the Gay Night at the Zoo in the Zoological Garden will also take place during Pride Week .

Mottos and number of participants

In the early years, the Berlin CSD was a relatively small event. From 400 participants in 1979, the number grew slowly to 5,000 in the 1980s (1989). It was not until the mid-1990s that the Berlin CSD gave itself an annual motto.
