The C Star is a research vessel of the British shipping company C Vessels. It sails under the flag of Mongolia .

history

The ship was built in 1975 as Suunta at the Finnish shipyard Rauma Rapola for the Finnish Maritime Administration. It was u. a. used to search for the Estonia, which sank in the Baltic Sea on the night of September 27th to 28th, 1994 .

The ship was rebuilt in 2012 and 2017. Since 2014 at the latest, it has been used in the Gulf of Aden to support units accompanying merchant ships to protect them from pirate attacks . The ship was sailing the Djibouti flag at the time . In 2017 it belonged to the shipping company C Vessels based in Cardiff , UK , which operated it under the Mongolian flag. Behind the shipping company is Sven Tomas Egerstrom, Managing Director of Maritime Global Services Ltd. The owner of the ship, Egerstrom, was accused of smuggling weapons worth over two million Swiss francs before 2015, according to the North Cypriot media. Egerstrom was previously the owner of Sea Patrol.

Defend Europe campaign

In 2017, activists from the Identitarian Movement chartered the ship for their Defend Europe campaign, with the aim of preventing refugees from coming to Europe across the Mediterranean . It has been reported repeatedly in the media.

On the way there, the ship came into conflict with the authorities of various countries. The ship was arrested and searched due to missing papers or allegations that Ukrainian mercenaries were on board. In Northern Cyprus, parts of the crew were temporarily arrested on suspicion of being a smuggler after 5 of the 20 crew members from Sri Lanka who were supposed to disembark in Egypt had applied for asylum.

On August 11, 2017, the ship sent a pan-pan message that the ship had an engine failure off Libya . The EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia in Rome ordered the ship Sea-Eye to assist the C Star, as this ship was the closest to the C Star . The Sea-Eye of the non-governmental organization Sea-Eye is a ship used by sea rescuers against which the crew of the C Star had previously demonstrated. The crew of the C Star refused to help and denied an emergency. According to data from the website marinetraffic.com, which shows ship movements around the world, the ship resumed its voyage on the same day.

The campaign ended on August 18, 2017, and the C Star headed for a position east of Malta . Its government refused the ship entry into Maltese ports, which was welcomed by the local human rights groups Aditus Foundation, Graffiti, Integra Foundation, the Jesuit Refugee Service (Malta) and The Critical Institute. The ship docked in Barcelona at the beginning of October 2017 . The Catalan Red Cross provided food and drink for the eight-man crew from Sri Lanka who were left on board without any resources or fuel . The activists of the Identitarian Movement were no longer on the ship.

Ship data

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The electricity for the drive motor is effected by a Wärtsilä - diesel engine . The two diesel generators for generating electricity for the on-board network come from Scania .

The ship, which was used as a backup and supply ship for the offshore industry, has seven cabins for crew members . Six of the cabins are single cabins, one is a double cabin. There are also twelve single cabins on board that can be converted into double cabins.

The C Star has a range of around 3,000  nautical miles and can remain at sea for around 30 days as a security ship.
