Inspired by the passenger transport offer in London , Cabdo GmbH was founded as a start-up on November 11, 2017 in Dortmund . The service is still unique in Dortmund and the surrounding area . Cabdo acts as a platform for travel brokerage, focuses mainly on the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and has set itself the goal of revolutionizing passenger transport in the Ruhr area . Cabdo has also been represented in the city of Essen since September 2019. Cabdo has been active in the city of Bochum since January 2020, in Hagen and the surrounding area since March 2020.

The start-up is an alternative to the existing passenger transport and defines itself as a driving service that is ordered via app . The classic driver service from Cabdo is offered in two vehicle categories : CabdoBlack (black Mercedes E-Class sedans) and CabdoGreen (environmentally friendly Hyundai IONIQ plug-in hybrids). Cabdo guarantees its passengers fixed prices for these categories, which do not change in the event of traffic jams or longer traffic light phases and which are below the regular taxi tariffs. Alternatively, the passenger can order a taxi or TaxiXL (large-capacity taxi ). Because of their fixed price, journeys in the CabdoBlack and CabdoGreen categories are generally cheaper than journeys in taxis and large taxis .

Milestones

In June 2018, Cabdo expanded the app to include the functionality of entering intermediate destinations and now makes it easier for Dortmunders to travel with friends and acquaintances. In July 2018, a loyalty system was added to the app, which offers regular users various advantages including the automatic conversion of loyalty points into Cabdo credits. From September 2018, Cabdo will also offer interested passengers the opportunity to find out the ticket prices on its own website before the journey or to check them after the journey.

In November 2018, the start-up celebrated its one-year anniversary and, according to its own information, was able to record 25,000 downloads at that time.

With the expansion of the fleet to include environmentally friendly electric vehicles in February 2019 and the associated introduction of the CabdoGreen category without a price disadvantage, Cabdo is the first provider in the Ruhr area to enable online booking of electric vehicles for passenger transport.

Although the Dortmund taxi cooperative obtained a fare increase of around 10% from the city ​​of Dortmund as the licensing authority in March 2019 , Cabdo stuck to the fixed price model for the main categories and expanded the loyalty program in the app to include the upcoming To counteract tariff increase.

In September 2019, Cabdo implemented the previously announced expansion into a second city in the Ruhr area . Since then, Cabdo has also been offering the services already known from Dortmund in the city of Essen.

The passenger confirms the pick-up and destination via the Cabdo app, selects one of four possible vehicle categories and the payment option ( cash , PayPal , EC or credit card ) and decides between an instant trip and a pre-order. The guest receives the final fixed price, which depends on the route, but not on the travel time, before booking. In the next step, the arrival time of the driver is displayed and the journey can be tracked via the app. Afterwards there is the possibility to rate the trip and to leave a feedback .

Price calculator

Since September 2018, Cabdo has offered passengers the option of using the Cabdo price calculator on their own website to find out before the journey or to check them after the journey. The main factors for determining the price (minimum trip, tariff, cancellation, waiting time) are listed. The prices for the CabdoBlack and CabdoGreen categories are fixed. Due to the integration of Google Maps in the Cabdo app, the prices are based on the number of kilometers of the shortest route and not on the travel time.

Unique selling points

According to its own information, Cabdo defines itself through the quality of service offered. This includes the professional training of the driver, the price-performance ratio and the safety of the passengers. The visual distinction of the vehicles and drivers in combination with courteous behavior towards the passengers are the main reasons for the positive reviews of the passengers.

Differentiation from the classic taxi

Cabdo GmbH sees itself as a passenger transport company with a rental car service and as a platform for arranging trips, but not as a taxi company or central office. The vehicles in the CabdoBlack and CabgoGreen categories drive with rental car concessions , so they are not allowed to stop at taxi places, take newcomers with them or accept orders from the taxi center . With regard to a uniform fleet and the appearance of the drivers, assignment to a chauffeur service would be more obvious than assignment to a taxi service.

Furthermore, the price structure of Cabdo is an important differentiator to a taxi company . The start-up determines the fixed price before the journey based on the number of kilometers of the shortest route, while with taxis the taximeter , which also calculates the time traveled, only shows the price to be paid at the end of the journey.

criticism

Outdoor taxi advertising

Since the company was founded by Cabdo, the activity has been viewed critically, especially by the Dortmund taxi cooperative. The conflict came to a head in March 2018. The point of contention was the outdoor advertising on the taxis belonging to the Cabdo platform . Taxi Dortmund's board of directors initiated an extraordinary general assembly with the aim of changing the statutes, which would have excluded drivers who advertise Cabdo on their vehicles from being members of the taxi cooperative with a three-quarters majority.

However, the vote was in favor of Cabdo, as around two thirds of the members present voted against the proposed amendment to the statutes. As the Dortmund Cartel Court decided in a similar legal dispute in 2017, such a passage in the Articles of Association would not be legal anyway.

Legal dispute with the Dortmund taxi cooperative

Although the taxi cooperative had declared in the course of the dispute over outdoor advertising that it would not feel the competition from the taxi agency Cabdo, it took legal action against Cabdo in June 2018.

At another general assembly , the members of the Dortmund taxi cooperative made the decision to sue the start-up's name (“Cabdo”) . Based on the Passenger Transport Act , the taxi cooperative was of the opinion that the translation of individual syllables of the name ("Cab") could lead to confusion with a taxi . The taxi cooperative saw a contradiction as Cabdo's business would be aimed solely at rental cars . In December 2018, the Dortmund Regional Court rejected the request for a name change and found that there was not enough room for confusion.
