Kino VOD Club - Austrian cinema for home - is a video-on-demand offer for Austrian cinema films by and with Austrian cinemas, producers and filmmakers. After the statutory blocking period, cinema films can be streamed with a pay-per-view concept on the website of currently 40 cinemas in Austria. The joint exploitation initiative was founded in 2017 and is operated by Cinema Service Platform GmbH.

history

Kino VOD Club is a brand of Cinema Service Platform GmbH based in Vienna. In 2015, the entrepreneurs Clemens Kopetzky and Alexander Syllaba started the Kino VOD Club exploitation initiative, on the one hand to increase the visibility of Austrian films and, on the other hand, to allow the cinemas to participate in the digital exploitation of films. In autumn 2017, the initiative was presented to the public with 23 participating art house and art house cinemas. The actor and cabaret artist Josef Hader spoke out as a supporter of the project at the first presentation in Vienna.

Secondary use

Kino VOD Club offers filmmakers an alternative exploitation option after the cinema exploitation and also enables smaller film productions to have access to digital visibility. Since the offer is not intended to compete with the big screen, the films only appear on the platform with a six-month blocking period. In the Kino VOD Clubs, payment is made by pay-per-view. As a technical development partner, NOUS Digital is responsible for the implementation in the area of streaming and, with the streaming host Verizon, offers appropriate encryption services to secure the actual content. In contrast to the usual streaming platforms, not only the licensors but also cinema operators participate in the proceeds.

Cooperations

In 2019, selected short films by young filmmakers were shown exclusively for the first time at KINO VOD CLUB as part of the Cinema Next initiative - Young Cinema from Austria . Six short films by Austrian newcomers could be streamed free of charge for one month in Season 1. KINO VOD CLUB was also a cooperation partner of the Viennale film festivals in Vienna and Diagonale in Graz in 2018 and 2019 .

reception

The project initiated by the industry is supported, among others, by actor Manuel Rubey , filmmaker Marie Kreutzer and designer and film producer Stefan Sagmeister via video message. Filmmakers such as the director Sudabeh Mortezai or the actors Laurenz Rupp and Peter Simonischek regularly curate a selection of their favorite films on the platform.
