Cacao is a village in the French commune of Roura with 950 inhabitants (as of 2007) in the overseas department of French Guiana .
Overview
The majority of the residents are Hmong from Laos , who have preserved many of their original traditions. The cultivation of vegetables and fruits is the most important industry. Every week, 60 tons of cocoa fruit and vegetables are sold in the Cayenne markets . On Sundays there is a traditional Lao market that attracts local and international tourists. Cacao has two primary schools and a police station.
history
In 1977 , after the end of the Vietnam War , 500 Hmong refugees from Laos settled in Cacao. The land was undeveloped tropical forest. Two years later, the community was able to support itself. After four years, the first surpluses could be sold.

A well-developed road connects Cacao with Cayenne in about 1.5 hours by car.
