Frédéric Cailliaud
Frédéric Cailliaud (born June 9, 1787 in Nantes , † May 1, 1869 there ) was a French explorer of Africa .
As a gold worker, Cailliaud traveled to Belgium , Holland and Italy . From Sicily he took a trip to Greece and Constantinople . In 1815 he came to Egypt and went up the Nile with Drovetti to the 2nd cataract . After Mehemed Ali commissioned him with the mineralogical exploration of the country, Cailliaud discovered the emerald pits on Jebel Sebra in 1818 from Edfu . In November 1819 he traveled from Fajum to the oases of Siwa , Bahariyya , Farafra , Dachla and Charga . At the beginning of 1820 he came back to the Nile.
On the subsequent campaign of Ibrahim Pascha Cailliaud was able to get the first more precise knowledge of the areas around Fasokl and Sannar . After these trips he returned to France and worked as a curator at the museum in his hometown from 1836 until his death .
Frédéric Cailliaud died on May 1st, 1869 in Nantes.
