The California Highway Patrol ( CHP ) is a police agency of the US state of California . It is responsible for patrol duty on all highways and also has the authority to act as the state police . With more than 10,500 employees, including 7,200 sworn police officers , it is one of the largest police departments in the United States. It is part of the California State Transportation Agency .

tasks

The California Highway Patrol has a specific responsibility as a highway patrol for all California state highways. These include freeways, expressways as well as US and interstate highways, which in German-speaking countries are comparable to motorways and federal highways. Despite their primary task of monitoring traffic, as the state police they are also empowered to enforce all applicable laws in every location on California territory.

In addition to traffic safety, punishing traffic offenses, recording accidents and prosecuting the law, the employees also perform other tasks such as the protection of state facilities and buildings and the personal protection of state officials. Accidents involving school buses generally fall within the scope of the Highway Patrol. Their officers also serve as bailiffs for the California Supreme Court and the California Court of Appeal . There is close cooperation with other (municipal) police authorities, for example the Los Angeles Police Department .

organization

The line is made by a commissioner (Commissioner) , which by the California governor is appointed. Today the CHP has eight divisions and more than 100 offices. Their role as state police is explained by the merger with and dissolution of the California State Police in 1995. The annual budget in 2014 was 2 billion US dollars , the average salary of a police officer was 118,000 US dollars.

There is a traffic accident command and a tactical special unit available around the clock . Trained service dogs are used to search for drugs or explosives.

The uniforms traditionally have a khaki color with a blue and gold stripe on the trousers. Leather clothing is black, the dress uniform is forest green, clothing for cold weather is dark blue. The badge is a gold, seven-pointed star with the state seal in the middle, with each point representing a quality. These are Character, Integrity, Knowledge, Judgment, Honor, Loyalty, and Courtesy. There is also a code of honor .
