Californium (III) iodide is an iodide of the artificial element and actinoid californium with the empirical formula CfI 3 . It is a red-orange solid and could be produced in microgram quantities under high vacuum . It can be represented at 500 ° C from californium (III) hydroxide (Cf (OH) 3 ) and hydrogen iodide (HI):
The triiodide sublimes at ~ 800 ° C without melting. It crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system in the space group R 3 (No. 148) with the lattice parameters a = 758.7 pm and c = 2081.4 pm with six formula units per unit cell . Its crystal structure is isotype with bismuth (III) iodide . The optical spectra of the CfI 3 show absorption peaks which correspond to a prediction which originate from an extrapolation of the corresponding peak positions of the CfCl 3 and the CfBr 3 .
