Californium (IV) fluoride is a fluoride of the artificial element and actinoid californium with the empirical formula CfF 4 . Californium occurs in this salt in the +4 oxidation state.
presentation
Californium (IV) fluoride can be prepared from californium (III) oxide Cf 2 O 3 by reaction with elemental fluorine at 400 ° C:
Alternatively, the fluoride is also formed by the β-decomposition of berkelium (IV) fluoride ( 249 BkF 4 ).
properties
Californium (IV) fluoride is a light green ion compound consisting of Cf 4+ and F - ions. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system in the space group C 2 / c (No. 15) and twelve formula units per unit cell . Its crystal structure is isotype with uranium (IV) fluoride .
Californium (IV) fluoride releases elemental fluorine when heated and forms californium (III) fluoride :
safety instructions
Classifications according to the CLP regulation are not available because they only include chemical hazard and play a completely subordinate role compared to the hazards based on radioactivity . The latter also only applies if the amount of substance involved is relevant.
