Steel mill in Calvert

The small town of Calvert gained more attention when the ThyssenKrupp company built a steelworks for the production of carbon steel and stainless steel on the eastern edge of the city with a direct connection to the Tombigbee River in 2007 for approx. 4.65 billion US $ (costs after completion) started operations in the second half of 2010. The plant should create up to 2,700 new jobs. However, due to falling global demand for steel and start-up difficulties in the upstream ThyssenKrupp CSA plant in Brazil, the plant mostly only produced at half capacity and worked at a loss.

The stainless steel section of the steelworks (annual capacity 1 million tons) was sold to the Finnish company Outokumpu in 2012, together with the other stainless steel activities of ThyssenKrupp . The remaining carbon steel section of the steel mill, with a capacity of 5.3 million tons, was sold to a consortium of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel in February 2014 for $ 1.5 billion .
