history
For the Indians living on the Columbia River , the onion of the Camas lily ( Edible prairie lily ( Camassia quamash )) was an important part of their diet. It was raised in meadows and swamps, harvested in mid-summer and cooked in simple baking pits for eating. The Camas lily also gave the city its name.
In 1883 a sawmill was opened in the village , followed by paper mills and the residents made a living primarily from the production of pulp, which was used to make paper and which dominated the local economy for more than a century. The city was officially founded in 1906.
