history

Camas lily , the plant that gives it its name

For the Indians living on the Columbia River , the onion of the Camas lily ( Edible prairie lily ( Camassia quamash )) was an important part of their diet. It was raised in meadows and swamps, harvested in mid-summer and cooked in simple baking pits for eating. The Camas lily also gave the city its name.

In 1883 a sawmill was opened in the village , followed by paper mills and the residents made a living primarily from the production of pulp, which was used to make paper and which dominated the local economy for more than a century. The city was officially founded in 1906.

The pulp and paper industry continues to play a vital role in Camas, but the city's economic base has expanded significantly in the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century . The newly established companies include Sharp , Underwriters Laboratories and Linear Technology . Camas also benefits greatly from its proximity to the population centers of Vancouver and Portland.
