Camille Perl
Camille Perl (born October 13, 1938 in Mamer , Luxembourg ; † July 21, 2018 in Vatican City ) was a Luxembourgish Roman Catholic priest and Vice President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei .
Life
Camille Perl entered the Benedictine order at a young age and studied liturgical science . He resigned from the order to become a secular priest and was initially pastor of the Luxembourg districts of Neudorf and Clausen before his bishop sent him to Rome in 1985 to the Congregation for Worship and Sacraments under Paul Augustin Cardinal Mayer . When the Pontifical Ecclesia Dei Commission was founded in 1988 by Pope John Paul II , Cardinal Mayer was appointed the first President and Monsignor Perl the first Secretary of this commission, which is responsible for contacts with Catholic traditionalists and matters of the Tridentine Rite . In this capacity, Msgr. Perl sought reconciliation with the Society of St. Pius X, founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre .
For Pope Benedict XVI. , whose close confidante and advisor he was, he was involved in the drafting of the Papal Letter Summorum Pontificum for the general release of the Tridentine Mass. Because of his merits, Msgr. Camille Perl was appointed Vice-President of the Ecclesia Dei Commission on March 13, 2008 for a period of five years , an office created especially for him. However, as a result of the restructuring of the Pontifical Ecclesia Dei Commission, Camille Perl was retired on July 8, 2009. Most recently he was Canon to St. Peter in the Vatican.
