Campaspe River in Elmore |
The Campaspe River is a river in the middle and north of the Australian state of Victoria .
Surname
He was named by Major Mitchell after Campaspe , a playmate of Alexander the Great . The Aborigines of the Rochester area called the river Yalooka .
River course
From its source in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range , the river flows north and flows into the Murray River at Echuca .
Upper course
The Campaspe River rises in the Wombat State Forest northwest of Bullengarook and southwest of Macedon , not far from Firth Park , a local campground and historic landmark. From there the river flows west into the town of Woodend , where it turns its course north and crosses the town of Kyneton . There it also crosses under the Calder Highway ( Melbourne - Bendigo via Kyneton).
Middle course
The middle course of the river is dominated by Lake Eppalock , a reservoir that also receives the main tributary of the Campaspe River, the Coliban River .
In this area, the small towns of Redesdale (above Lake Eppalock) and Axedale (below Lake Eppalock) are on the river. The McIvor Highway (Melbourne – Bendigo via Heathcote) also crosses the river there.
Lower course
The towns of Elmore and Rochester are on the lower reaches of the Campaspe River. There the Midland Highway (Bendigo - Shepparton ) and the Northern Highway (Melbourne - Echuca) cross the river.
At Echuca , the river flows into the Murray River.
history
Aborigines lived in the area around the Campaspe River for thousands of years. The settlers from Europe arrived at the upper reaches in 1834.
After settling the area around Kyneton , the Europeans removed the original vegetation and instead planted willow and hawthorn hedges , some of which can still be seen today.
For a number of years volunteers from the area were busy clearing the willows. Indigenous tree species were again planted on the willow-free bank sections. Hiking and biking trails were laid out on a river bank, creating a small recreation area for Kyneton.
