Campylium chrysophyllum (real gold sleepmoss) is aspecies of deciduous moss from the Amblystegiaceae family .

features

Campylium chrysophyllum forms loose, often golden brown, shiny lawns. The rather delicate plants with creeping to ascending stems are mostly irregularly branched. The dry and moist, always upright to sparsely protruding leaves are long and pointed from the broad, heart-shaped leaf base. The leaf margins are flat and entire or somewhat serrated at the leaf base. The leaf vein is usually simple and extends approximately to the middle of the leaf, more rarely it is double and only short. Branch leaves are slightly smaller than stem leaves. The leaf cells in the middle of the leaf are 6 to 8 µm wide and 4 to 8 times as long as they are wide, while those of the leaf corners are about 10 µm in size and almost square.

The moss is diocesan and rarely fruit. The seta is 2.0 to 2.5 centimeters long and red, the spore capsule almost cylindrical, slightly curved and contracted under the mouth, the lid bluntly pointed. The finely granulated spores are 10 to 15 µm in size.

Distribution and location requirements

Campylium chrysophyllum occurs in the northern hemisphere in Europe, Asia (excluding Southeast Asia), in North Africa and from North America to northwestern South America. In the limestone regions of Central Europe it is fairly widespread, if not often, but rarely in northern Germany.

It grows on moderately dry, open, calcareous soil or, more rarely, on limestone in sunny or partially shaded places, especially in semi-arid grasslands or in light, stony forests. Locations in lime-rich swamps and moors are a rare exception.
