final
In the final, two former world champions met with Alex Higgins and John Spencer , both of whom were to become world champions one more time (Higgins 1982 and Spencer 1977). Both had defeated two amateurs and one professional player on their way to the final before they met in the final.
After an even start of the match, Spencer won two frames in a row after Higgins equalized 2-2, before Higgins came up to 3-4. Then Spencer extended his lead to 6-3 before Higgins came up 4-6. But now Spencer won five frames in a row to 11-4 lead. Higgins won the 16th frame, but Spencer extended his lead and took the lead 14-5. Higgins could still win four frames to 9:14, but with 8:89, 51:72 and 40:68 Spencer won the last three frames necessary to win the match and tournament.
