Cannelloni ( ital. Canna 'tube') are large, thick tubular noodles made from durum wheat with a length of about 10 cm and a diameter of about 3 cm. They are made by rolling sheets of dough into tubes. Cannelloni are an Italian type of noodle ( pasta ) that is traditionally filled with ricotta , spinach and minced meat and gratinated with tomato sauce or béchamel sauce . The filling is poured into the uncooked tube noodles, which are then placed in a baking dish and baked in the oven . Alternative fillings can consist of vegetables , cheese , meat, and fish . A popular alternative sauce is ragù alla bolognese .
