Cantapa is a town in the La Paz department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Cantapa is the largest town in the canton Curva Pucará in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Laja in the province of Los Andes and is located at an altitude of 4032  m . Cantapa is embedded in a succession of ridges that extend from the southernmost section of Lake Titicaca , the Gulf of Taraco , in a south-easterly direction and reach heights of up to 4825  m . The Río Huararuni in the west and the Quebrada Pustiri in the east flow through the village, both of which flow downstream into the Río Guaquira .

Cantapa lies on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The region's climate is typical of the time of day , with average temperatures fluctuating more during the day than during the year.

The mean annual temperature of Viacha is just under 9 ° C, the annual precipitation is around 600 mm (see Viacha climate diagram). The monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 6 ° C in July and 10 ° C from November to February. Transport network

Cantapa is 69 kilometers by road west of La Paz , the capital of the department.

From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 2 leads west to El Alto and another five kilometers in a north-westerly direction. Then the Ruta 1 branches off to the west and after another twenty kilometers reaches Laja . After a further 21 kilometers in a westerly direction, Ruta 1 crosses the Río Guaquira in the direction of Tiawanacu near Curva Pucará . Here a country road branches off in a south-easterly direction from Ruta 1 and after another nine kilometers reaches Cantapa .

Due to the historical population development, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Laja 97.2 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
