The municipality Laja is a district in the La Paz department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Laja is one of four municipalities in the province of Los Andes and is located in the southern part of the province. It borders the province of Ingavi to the west, south and southeast , the province of Murillo to the east and the municipality of Pucarani to the north .

The municipality has 74 localities ( localidades ), the administrative seat of the municipality is Laja with 876 inhabitants in the eastern part of the district. The largest towns in the municipality are Puchucollo Alto with 2461 inhabitants, Cantapa with 1541 inhabitants and Callamarca with 1027 inhabitants ( 2012 census ).

The municipality of Laja is located at an average altitude of 3900  m southeast of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.

The mean annual temperature of the region is 8 ° C, the annual precipitation is 500 to 600 mm (see climate diagram El Alto). The region has a distinct daytime climate, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 7 ° C in July and 11 ° C in December. The monthly precipitation is between less than 10 mm in the months of June and July and close to 100 mm from December to February.
